Using predictive text in writing

Predictive text on a computer or phone will offer you suggestions of what the next word could be. We often see this when writing on our mobile phones and words are offered above the on-screen keyboard as possible next words. This can be very useful when writing as it can sometimes be hard to think how to phrase something or you have complex spellings. Just make sure that you either read or listen back to your work afterwards to check it really does say what you want it to say.

Predictive Text in Windows:

  • Press the Windows button and I to launch the Settings window.
  • Choose Time and Language by selecting it from the left-hand menu.
  • Choose ‘Typing’
  • Look for the heading ‘Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard’ – move the slider to ‘On’

Then open a Word document and start typing. Words will appear in a bubble just ahead of your cursor and you can select them with your mouse to insert into the text.

Predictive Text on a Mac:

To turn on the predictive text on your Mac, open System Preferences and select Keyboard. From there, select the Text tab. Make sure that the box next to “Correct spelling automatically” is checked, as this will enable predictive text on your Mac. You can also configure additional settings such as the type of words used for predictions and whether or not to show suggestions in the Touch Bar (if your Mac has one). Once you’ve made your selections, click Apply. Your Mac should now be using predictive text when you type.
