Speaking instead of typing (dictate)

Some people find it helpful to speak rather than to type. There is software that enables you to do this. Microsoft Office has now enabled ‘dictate’ throughout its apps (except Excel), and on installed versions, online versions and mobile versions. This means you can speak your thoughts wherever and whenever you need to. The video below shows how you can use Dictate in Microsoft Office Word. It can also do basic punctuation.

You can press the Win button and H together to enable ‘speech-to-text’ in any part of Windows.

More information about the punctuation you can use and controls that can be used verbally is available from Dictate your Documents in WordSome disabled people may require more sophisticated speech-to-text software, if, for example, you would also like to control your computer with your voice – Windows 11 Access can also you to use Cortana to control your computer as well.
